50 years of excellence and tradition
This year will be no exception, as the world's biggest circus festival celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024. This 46th edition promises to be totally exclusive, and will close the commemorations in honor of the centenary of Prince Rainier III (1923-2023). The former Prince of Monaco will be majestically remembered at this spectacular festival of which he was the founder. Created in 1974, the Festival was set up both to promote the art of the circus and to preserve its tradition. Over the past half-century, the Festival has rapidly grown in the Monegasque region, and has become one of the most prestigious events in the circus world.
Dates to remember and special events
Mark your calendars to attend this exceptional artistic event taking place from January 19 to 28, under the Chapiteau at Espace Fontvieille. Let us tell you more about what's in store for this 2024 edition.
In addition to the breathtaking competitions that make up the Festival, other special events are also on offer for the occasion. The celebrations kick off on Saturday, January 13, with the free Grand Circus Parade in Town. Depart from the Chapiteau at 2 p.m. for the Prince's Palace, where the show takes place, and begin at 2.30 p.m. On the evening of Saturday January 22, soccer fans will be delighted by the Fight Aids Cup charity match organized in aid of Fight Aids Monaco at Stadium Louis II. On the same day, at around 7 p.m., attend an ecumenical celebration featuring circus artists and an orchestra.
During the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival, a number of prizes are traditionally awarded to the most talented artists. Acrobats, clowns, jugglers, horse and bird trainers all put on breathtaking performances in their bid to win a prize. Without doubt, the most prestigious awards, the Gold, Silver and Bronze Clowns, are awarded to the best circus acts of the year. Audiences also have their say, as they vote for their favorite act and then award the Prix du Public to the one they consider most deserving.
Young participants are also rewarded in the Prix du Cirque de Demain awards. Emerging artists of the new generation are congratulated on their involvement in the circus arts. In parallel with the Festival, the New Generation Festival is usually held, showcasing the many young circus artists who represent the future of the circus. This year, to mark the Festival's long-awaited mid-centenary, the two events will merge, and the 11th edition of the New Generation Festival will mingle with the various competitions on offer at the end of January. The result is likely to be surprising and undoubtedly breathtaking! Judged by an international jury of top professionals in the field, young acrobats, tightrope walkers and clowns will be battling it out for the Junior d'Or, d'Argent or de Bronze and thus ensuring their future as circus performers.
