Like many of Monaco's areas, Fontvieille was developed on the sea. In 1966, the first constructions were initiated as part of Monaco's economic development. Famous for its business district and marina, this residential area has contributed to the Rock's reputation for urbanization thanks to the engineering prowess developed during the completion of the district. This urban environment is ideal for families wishing to settle down in Monaco as the area brilliantly combines living and working spaces.
Fontvieille: the high-tech residential district
On the Mediterranean coast, bordered by the districts of La Colle, Les Moneghetti and Monaco Ville, where the Prince's Palace is located, the Fontvieille district is a concentration of contemporary architectural designs where numerous luxury residences in the neo-Provencal style offer large apartments with a sea view.
Created in 1966 under the era of Rainier III, this pharaonic project, which came out of the ground in record time, was built just after the creation of Larvotto district to the east of Monaco. Covering nearly 22 hectares, one third of which is dedicated to the marina, Fontvieille is built around its waterfront where alleys and gardens flourish alongside residential areas.
The district is also home to most of Monaco's major companies. For several years, the Principality has chosen to welcome high-tech and non-polluting companies in the heart of this business district.
The must-see places in the neighborhood
The Louis II stadium
Inaugurated in the middle of the 80's, the Louis II stadium is the mythical meeting place of the soccer competitions of its flagship club, AS Monaco. Designed to host the most prestigious championships in Europe such as the Champions League, it has a capacity of 18500 seats. A true sports complex, the Louis II stadium also houses numerous sports facilities such as athletic tracks, an Olympic swimming pool and a sports hall for practicing various activities such as basketball, volleyball, handball, judo, fencing and gymnastics.
Since its creation in 1973, the Fontvieille marina has helped relieve the Hercules port located in the heart of the Principality. Nearly 275 vessels can moor there and only those with a year-round ring have access. Its marina offers multiple advantages to boaters, such as the proximity of shops and leisure facilities.
The Rainier III esplanade and the museums
Ideally located between La Condamine and Fontvieille, the Rainier III esplanade is home to 4 Monegasque museums:
- The naval museum
- The museum of stamps and coins
- The exhibition of the car collection of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince of Monaco
- And the animal garden of the Principality.
The Rainier III esplanade, strategically located, also provides access to the shopping center and offers a choice view of the port of Fontvieille.
The landscaped park of Fontvieille and the Princess Grace rose garden
Planted with Mediterranean and exotic species, the Fontvieille landscape park surrounds the marquee and remains a popular place for families. At the heart of this green park, the Princess Grace rose garden is an English garden where more than 7,000 rosebushes flourish among century-old olive trees.
On the horizon: a brand new shopping center in Fontvieille
This is one of the Principality's new architectural projects: the redevelopment and expansion of the Fontvieille shopping center. Three additional floors will accommodate 70 stores instead of the current 38. The aesthetics of the building will be totally transformed and will emphasize the environmental aspect. This ambitious project will bring together spaces dedicated to shopping, offices and housing.
This pleasant setting with a view of the port will be completed by the installation of a two-hectare landscaped park by 2027.
Living in the Fontvieille district: an ideal setting for families
Its urban park, seafront walkways and proximity to the shopping center, sports, cultural and leisure complexes are all assets that make it an ideal environment for families with children who wish to live in Monaco.
Most of the luxury residences on the seafront offer large areas and an exceptional living environment where it is possible to combine family life and work, thanks to the immediate proximity of the business district.
